Dear Benson Hill Families,
Welcome to Benson Hill Elementary School, home of the Bobcats! We are a school rich in culture and community, and we look forward to partnering with you to create and sustain a supportive learning environment that fosters the academic, personal and social growth of all our students.
Benson Hill is a reading school. We encourage and expect students to read or be read to daily, fostering strong reading skills for academic success and a love of reading for pleasure. We work hard to insure that all our students receive quality reading and writing instruction, as well as additional support as needed, to become competent readers and writers.
Math is another area of focus at Benson Hill. We teach students how think critically and problem solve in math, as well as master computational skills, which are the building blocks to mathematical success.
While we are busy helping students learn the academic skills necessary for success, we also teach students how to be respectful, responsible citizens. As Benson Hill Bobcats, we have five school-wide “Pawsitive” Expectations:
1. Be safe.
2. Be responsible.
3. Be respectful.
4. Follow directions.
5. Do your best!
Students are consistently reinforced for following our school-wide expectations and making positive choices. We strive to help students understand how making wise choices helps them to become good citizens and contributes in a positive way to our school community.
We have fun at Benson Hill! While we are busy learning and developing good citizenship, we enjoy special times and celebrations together. Some popular school-wide events include Culture Night, Dance Night, Book Fairs, spring Carnival, and our Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program, where students receive free books three times a year.
We encourage you to get involved at Benson Hill! There are many opportunities to be become an active participant in our school community. Most importantly, we want you to partner with us in the education of your children. Stay informed about what your child is learning in school and how you can support their learning at home. Look for daily/weekly communication home from your child's teacher, and don't hesitate to ask questions! Working together, we can insure success for all our students.
I look forward to creating and sustaining a strong partnership with you as we develop caring, competent students who will be ready to meet the challenges of our global society. Please contact me at anytime if I may be of assistance to you.
